  1. The good news for red wine lovers is that it really can cut your blood pressure.
  2. The bad news is the alcohol has to be removed first.
  3. Drinking non-alcoholic red wine might not sound as much fun but for people at risk of heart problems it could be a lifesaver, it is claimed.
  4. A study shows for the first time that natural antioxidant compounds in red wine - not the alcohol - are good for your heart health.
  5. Researchers in Spain say the alcohol weakens the ability of red wine to cut blood pressure, effectively canceling out any benefits.
  6. They found that men at high risk for heart disease had lower blood pressure after drinking non-alcoholic red wine every day for four weeks.
  7. The researchers studied 67 men with diabetes or three or more cardiovascular risk factors who ate a common diet combined with different drinking habits.
  8. They were asked to drink either 10 ounces of red wine a day - the equivalent of a couple of glasses - the same amount of non-alcoholic red wine or about three ounces of gin (a couple of drinks).
  9. All of the men tried each combination of food and drink for four weeks.
  10. The red wine and non-alcoholic wine contained equal amounts of polyphenols, an antioxidant that decreases blood pressure.
  11. During the red wine phase, the men had very little reduction in blood pressure and there was no change while drinking gin.
  12. However, after drinking non-alcoholic red wine, blood pressure decreased, possibly reducing the risk of heart disease by 14 per cent and stroke by as much as 20 per cent.

Answer: First we’d like to give you some general information on metabolism and how it works.

Metabolism is the rate at which the body uses energy to support all basic functions essential to sustain life, plus all energy requirements for additional activity and digestive processes. There are three components to energy expenditure (calories burned):

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR):  This is the amount of calories needed to run all essential functions and chemical reactions while in a resting and quiet state. RMR is the largest part of total metabolism and accounts for 65 - 75% of calories burned in a day.

Thermic Effect of Food (TEF):  This is the energy used by the body to digest and absorb the nutrients present in the food we eat. The rate of energy used for the TEF is about 10%, and can be increased depending on the composition of each meal.

Physical activity:  This is the amount of energy the body burns during daily activities such as exercise, recreation, work, housework, etc. Daily physical activities account for 20 - 40% of calories burned each day. This part will vary depending on the individual and how active they are each day. A sedentary person will require fewer calories to maintain weight than a busy worker in a construction site!

Lack of physical activity is one of the biggest reasons why people gain weight more easily now than they did in the past (think back 100 years), not a slow metabolism. Why do men and women deposit fat in different places?

Answer: Gender & hormonal differences play major roles in the different fat storage patterns of men and women. Some researchers believe the historical roles of men and women in hunter/gatherer societies may have influenced this. Men were typically the hunters, having to run after (or from) prey. Moving fat on the arms and legs would have a much higher metabolic cost (meaning it would have taken more energy), which would be problematic when food was scarce. This is the reason, the theory continues, for a more central, abdominal storage area in men. It is easier and less calorically "expensive" to move. Women, of course, store fat in breast and hip areas with the hips and legs accumulating much of the body fat during adult weight gain. From an evolutionary standpoint, breasts were necessary for successful reproduction and hips were designed to help carry offspring during pregnancy.
